Re Doc's entry . My dad was scotch and english and family date back
to 1880's in Kearny. It was always heavily scotch as demonstrated by
the bakeries and fish & chip places, Knox church etc. I left in 1960 and
was amazed to see recent Observer article stating in 2003 scots were
down to only 3% of population. We had only a few Portuguese in 1950
and I see that's growing very fast, probably migrating from Ironbound
section of Newark. That won't hurt our soccer as they are true enthusiasts.

Travelled all over the country and Europe and folks know of
Kearny. In Scotland I found a book that refers to Kearny
as wee Glasgow. Mention Kearny soccer and everyone knows
of the boys from Kearny. Thanks for the memories.

Would have graduated in 1958, but left school and got my GED 2
years later. Many good memories and some bad memories of school
but mostly the good. I have seen names listed that I had not heard in

First I wish to say..Thank you Steve for bringing back the memories
in words and pictures that have never left my heart. I lived on Brighton
Ave between Afton and Bergen Avenues. Unfortunately I moved before
graduation in June of 1962. The best days of my life were spent in
Garfield Elem, Washington JR High and Kearny High. I have a couple
of pictures from elementary days (I will send as soon as I get unpacked).
All other photos have been lost due to a theft. Names of some of my
fellow classmates have long since escaped me...but the warm feelings
I had for them has not. Again...I say THANK YOU...Gayle

I want to thank you for the fine job you did on your website.
I wish more people would consider doing what you have set out to
accomplish. I think it is just great. I just surfed in after doing an
engine search on Google looking for "Darling Lorraine" by the
Knockouts. Wow! What a pleasant surprise! I really enjoyed
listening to that very rare song, which is very unique in its own
right. Thanks for the background info on the artists. I am an Oldies
Collector and my son and I have our own recording studio and label.
He is only 20 years old but loves most all genre of music. One of
our recording artists is a young Hispanic girl who has a CD entitled
"Last Kiss." Check out her website at www.JudithMuro.com She
has a video that you can download free of her singing the Spanglish
version of "Angel Baby", a song that Rosie and the Originals
released
in 1960. Rosie originally wrote the song when she was 16 but had to
go to court to fight a copyright battle, which she eventually won. At
any rate, a few years back, Rosie was on the same venue as the
"Knockouts" at the Garden in New York City during a Richard Nader
concert as a tribute to Alan Freed. I am currently Rosie's publicist. If

Hi Steve, Found this site through my cousin Al Jarvis. Was
born in Kearny and went to Garfield School. Then moved to
Livingston. But.....I went back every year to visit grandparents,
cousins, aunts and uncles. Still have cousins living there. Both my
parents attended KHS. Somewhere I have a picture of a class from
Garfield circa 1942. If I can find it....would you want it? Keep up

Hey Steve, I have my 1925 and 1936 copy of the Lamp Post
yearbooks headed your way for scanning. Sorry for the delay
but Homeland Security requirements forced me to mail them
from the post office. I originally mailed them from the house
and it took two weeks for the PO to return them and advise me I
couldn't mail them from home. Lots of familiar surnames in these

Just returned from a visit to Kearny. Had a wonderful time.
Past the H.S. still looks the same. I lived across from it on
Devon St. Last time I was up there I took a picture of the
Twin Towers from Devon and Garfield. The site is not
the same.
